The prefabricated BIPV kit is conceived as a plug‑and‑build solution, compatible with both the renovation of existing façades and the construction of additional floors.
The solution is designed and manufactured off‑site and installed on the building with limited disruption to occupants.
The integrated solution is based on timber‑based prefabricated façade elements, composed by a wooden-based frame with mineral wool as insulation layer to enhance the insulation capacity of the building.
Envelope technology
Prefabricated envelope technology
The envelope elements are designed through a digital workflow, linking survey, design and production phases. This process improves dimensional accuracy and facilitates the integration of multiple systems, such as insulation, cladding, energy technologies and building services, within a single, coordinated envelope solution.

Circularity
Prefabricated industrialised façades are fixed with a metal anchoring system on the existing wall, through screws, thus disassembly is easy.
Ease of disassembly (system level)
Easy
Ease of reuse
Parts can be removed, screws of metal fundation are glued.
Ease of recycling (component level)
Wood can be used for energy purposes, metals and mineral wool recycled for the same purpose.

Performance
The wall assemblies deliver three main thermal performances: the first relates to the prefabricated panels used for the IDR of the existing building, which combine the original wall with the prefabricated panel to achieve a U-value < 0.35 W/m²K; the second relates to the prefabricated facade used for the added floor, which is an entirely new assembly reaching a U-value < 0.25 W/m²K; the third is the ETICS system applied to the existing wall, also achieving a U-value < 0.35 W/m²K. In addition, the façade has been designed to comply with applicable standards regarding acoustic performance, fire resistance, and water and airtightness.

Certifications and tests
Tests have been done in the outdoor labs of Eurac Research to study the integration of the BIPV unit in the industrialised prefabricated façade.
Simulation campaign
Eurac Research conducted simulations to calculate the incident radiation in order to determine the optimal placement of the BIPV in the building façade.

This medium size building is a multi-use building, single owner, built in 1982. It is composed by 71 small residential units (singles, couples and families), and some offices in the ground floor. The buildings are part of a bigger complex of “line building”. At the ground floor there are some offices, four residential floors and on the top an attic area with reduced height (before renovation). The structural part of the building is steel-reinforced concrete frame with bricks masonry as perimeter walls. Both building are connected to a district heating, poor envelope and windows performances. The window-to-wall ratio is 20% in the existing building, 22% in the new floor.

Explore prefabricated integrated technologies
The prefabricated panels used are timber-frame façade elements designed for a quick and efficient installation. Each panel is custom-sized to fit the building’s geometry. These panels integrate multiple layers, including thermal insulation, smart glazing windows, and ventilation units, enabling a high-performance envelope. The panels are engineered for quick on-site assembly, up to 180 m² per day, and are anchored to the existing structure after partial removal of the outer brick layer.

Timber Prefabricated Multifunctional Façade
The façade elements are made of a solid wood exterior cladding based on slow-grown thermo-treated pine (heat treatment to improve timber stability). In the elements, both the OSB board on the inner surface and the outside wind barrier provide airtight layers within the building envelope.New energy efficient windows are integrated in the façade.
